The Department of Mechanical Engineering aspires to educate students about the fundamentals of engineering science and analysis methods appropriate for engineers to use in formulating solutions to problems; to involve students in design experiments throughout their education in all aspects of mechanical engineering including team-work, and the application of basic engineering knowledge; to teach students how to setup and conduct experiments including the analysis and interpretation of the experimental data; to equip the students with professional ethics and the willingness towards life-long learning. The programs are dedicated to prepare the graduates to be leading contributors in response to the needs and demands of industry and society.

General Information

Mechanical Engineering Department, which offers a 4-year undergraduate program, aims to cultivate on the creation integration, transfer and application of knowledge relevant to the disciplines of Mechanical Engineering. The Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, http://www.abet.org. The aim of the programs is to encourage students to express and improve themselves with their knowledge and skills to respond to engineering problems in wide range of areas. The programs are dedicated to prepare the graduates to be leading contributors in response to the dire needs of industry and society. Also, the purpose of the post graduate programs is to contribute to the technological improvement to serve national and international communities. Through continuously developing our educational and research programs, engineers become professional leaders who can apply their knowledge and skills to work on the engineering problems encountered by community and industry.

Education

Education offered in Mechanical Engineering undergraduate program provides basic skills and knowledge regarding the engineering profession and, at the same time, prepares the students for postgraduate programs so that they contribute to the science and technology during their studies. 50% of the student population consists of international students which enhances communication in English among the students. The only common language among the students is English.

The department has extensive, well-equipped modern laboratories that cover all the core disciplines of Mechanical Engineering. The automotive, thermodynamics, solid dynamics and many other laboratories closely follow the developments in technology. The Graduation Project Design Course involves team work and aims to motivate students to develop solutions to the current design problems. Through the graduation project, students understand the design process, gain practical experience and develop their research and communication skills.

Facilities

The department has an extensive and well-equipped seminar room seating up to 150 people and a secondary seminar room for 20 people. CADCAM, computer and Autocad laboratories are available for teaching, projects and research, and it closely integrates the processes associated with design, manufacturing, and robotics. Technical staff helping and supporting students in the machine workshop have over 10 years of experience. Apart from an academic advisor for each student, lab assistants are available to assist students. Along with the university library, the department houses another library consisting of engineering books and graduation projects.

Career Opportunities

At the end of the mechanical engineering education which is based on a blend of theory and practice, students receive an undergraduate (B.S.) degree. A majority of students begin their professional careers immediately upon graduation or continue with graduate studies. The graduates are creative, good communicators and skilled at solving problems and delivering results. With these qualities, they not only start their careers as high quality practitioners, but are also sought by top companies for their potential in management, consulting and other senior professional positions all around the world.
