Journalism
About the Department
The journalism department at CIU aims to prepare students for a career in the modern news media and to help them reach their potential as journalists. Our courses give students a solid background in the history and theory of the journalism, while also developing their skills in writing. In addition, students study news photography and page design, giving them a broad range of skills they can use in the modern newsroom. To help students prepare for world outside the university, the journalism department also runs the CIU News Agency. Students are encouraged to gain experience at the agency and to produce news reports and photographs for distribution to national news outlets. Students working at the CIU News Agency also manage a news website (ajans.ciu.edu.tr) in Turkish and English.
Educational Opportunities
During the academic year, visits are organized to national newspapers and agencies in North Cyprus and media professionals who are experts in their field are invited to contribute to classes. Writers, managing editors, news editors, page designers, photographers and photo editors also attend panels, seminars, and conferences and workshops for the benefit of students. The most extensive extracurricular activity undertaken in the department is the news agency, and the associated and news website and newspapers. News stories are monitored on a daily basis, prepared, arranged and edited for national media organisations, and published by students on the department’s news website.
Career Areas
Graduating students are able to find employment at print media and broadcast organizations, to work in public relations at state or private organizations, or to continue their academic careers at universities. Due to their fluency in both spoken and written English, they are also able to work for international agencies and companies. Great journalists are experts with language: they can write simply and fluently and are able to report and to edit. They can become reporters in the fields of news, sport, economics, politics, nature, motoring, technology and health, as well as photo editors, visual directors, executive editors, news managers, news coordinators and broadcasting coordinators – opportunities abound for dedicated and enthusiastic graduates.
